Entities authorised by the FMA

Liechtenstein legal entities holding a current authorisation from the Financial Market Authority Liechtenstein — banks, insurers, management companies, asset managers, trustees, TT service providers and others. The FMA also lists foreign firms operating here under EEA freedom of services; they are not included, because they are not Liechtenstein legal entities.

Anyone carrying on banking business, managing assets, insuring risks or acting as a trustee in Liechtenstein requires authorisation from the Financial Market Authority. The FMA keeps a public register of these; the categories on this page follow its own wording, so an authorisation is called here what it is called officially.

An authorisation says something different from a register entry. The register entry says an entity exists; the authorisation says it may carry on a particular supervised activity. A profile shows both side by side, with date and status, and the two can change independently.

Liechtenstein's banks operate in the European single market through the EEA while also being inside the customs union with Switzerland and the Swiss franc. The FMA, not this page, is authoritative for the current state of any authorisation.

Who grants financial licences in Liechtenstein?

The Liechtenstein Financial Market Authority (FMA). It supervises banks, investment firms, insurers, funds, trustees and other financial intermediaries, and keeps the public register of authorisations.

How many banks are there in Liechtenstein?

Few — the “Bank” category on this page states the current count from our data, and the number is in that category page's own title. The FMA's register is the binding one.

Does an authorisation mean a firm is still licensed today?

Not necessarily. We show the status and the date as published. Whether an authorisation still stands follows from the FMA's register.

Is a Liechtenstein licence valid in the EU?

Through the EEA Agreement the European financial-market directives apply, and with them the European passport in principle. What it covers in a given case is a question for the FMA.
